ABSTRACT

Aggression is part of human development from the beginning of life and as such we can talk about it as an instinct. Aggressive tendencies of all sorts constitute a considerable proportion of human behaviours, of human drives. These tendencies are necessary to go forward in life, to achieve, to survive. Aggression in adolescence also reflects the developmental necessity for the adolescent to define himself as a separate person and is thus part of the developmental push forward from childhood to adulthood. The adolescent needs to be able to use healthy aggression in order to succeed at school, at work, socially, and in the world in general. This becomes more and more important towards the end of adolescence in order to facilitate the completion of multiple tasks. Fights with the parents may be verbal or physical. Whilst verbal aggression is part of normal adolescent behaviour, physical aggression is always a sign of disturbance.
