ABSTRACT

Olivia treated the idea of the "rescuer" or helper with great scorn. Towards the end of the second term, she repeatedly mentioned "Sleeping Beauty"—for example: Olivia was speaking about Sleeping Beauty, how roses were growing high around her, and how there was a prince with a bow and arrow trying to get through to her. Olivia was described as unable to mould to the body when she was a baby, so that she was difficult to hold. Her motor milestones were normal, while her language development was extremely advanced. Describing her little brother's temper tantrum, she did not just focus on what he looked like, as she would have done earlier, but talked about what she had felt and what she thought her mother felt. This remarkable little girl's sense of psychic strength developed together with her imagination and her capacity to acknowledge her love as well as her hate.
