ABSTRACT

A thing I appreciated about my own psychoanalysis was my analyst’s ability to do so much with so few words. I remember those moments when, almost casually it seemed, he pointed me at what I had to think about. Of course these would be just the things that were hard for me to think about. It was a revelation, this learning in the absence of lecture. Having been raised by parents who were school teachers and inveterate explainers, I was particularly grateful.
