ABSTRACT

These techniques of data analysis of non-linear patterns and dynamics clearly require an in-depth knowledge of dynamical systems and chaos theory combined with specialist mathematical skills and knowledge. The application of chaos theory and use of such non-linear data analysis techniques within the field of psychoanalytic research would require collaborative research projects that would bring together psychoanalytic clinicians and academics with the necessary knowledge and skills. Another area of research is into the nature of the psychoanalytic process. R. Galatzer-Levy's paper, in offering the concept of linked oscillators, opens up a perspective that enables a much fuller consideration of all the verbal and non-verbal factors that have an impact on the psychoanalytic experience. Donald Spence, a psychoanalyst with an interest in links between psychoanalysis and narrative, has written about recursion in narrative and its relevance to mental life and clinical experience.
