ABSTRACT

Boundaries in a group create safety and a sense of stability, and contribute to the developing intimacy and the ability of the participants to develop trust and open themselves. The external group boundaries are surely looser on the Internet than with a face-to-face group, while other boundaries need closer examination. The group psychotherapy list established a tradition of encounters among the list members participating in the annual meeting of the American Group Psychotherapy Association in the USA, and the international group psychotherapy conferences of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy. These meetings have a special impact on list life, especially as they were initiated and encouraged by the list manager. Roles emerge in every group quite from the beginning, and some of them are crucial for the functioning of the group. Some roles facilitate the ability of the group to work on specific issues or dilemmas that are universal and emerge in any group.
