ABSTRACT

The psychoanalytic term sublimation describes the more creative, social effects of co-opting the neural systems and the body's energies. Social organisations can be thought of as systems of roles in which expectations are sent from the occupier of one role to one playing another role in the system. Self-concept systems rest upon the sorts of grave social responsibilities. Social organisations can be thought of as systems of roles in which expectations are sent from the occupier of one role to one playing another role in the system. Learning self- and non-self-concepts, and when and how to use them, occurs over development and involves play. These concepts are involved in producing expectations of pleasure and pain that work to inhibit full enactment of overt aggressive and sexual fixed action patterns. Pain avoidance thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are not especially needed, and the pleasures of approach can dominate.
