ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Christian who has been suffering from an ill-defined feeling of vacuity and despair. Although as a student he is quite successful, he feels that his life is pointless. He does not know whether he is exaggerating his feelings and making a drama out of everything or whether he really has a problem. At the first few sessions, Christian describes his life in glowing colours. It is easy to establish a trustful relationship and he appears to find the interviews beneficial. In this phase of therapy, Christian meets a young woman who has fallen in love with him and would not hesitate to embark on a serious relationship. Towards the end of therapy, Christian engages with separation at various different levels: infant longings, delusions of erotic grandeur, distressing fantasies. At the end of follow-up, psychiatrist ask Christian to assess the various categories in the ABCDE model.
