ABSTRACT

The brain plays a part because what gets there somehow, via inner contact or external observation, can be conscious. In our childhood, we acquire conscious control over certain parts of our body by training as our nos develops in the given social structure, control over excretion in the anal phase, etc. The latest results of neurobiology support Freudian psychology. It is illuminating to examine how it works regarding dreams, because we dream in our private world, but when we tell it to others, when we share it and feel it together, the dream moves into the public world, into the world of nos. Modern biology helped us to realise the difference between consciousness as mental state, and the content of consciousness. The peculiarly human quality of being conscious of our consciousness, and turning concrete perceptions into abstract ideas, is based primarily on language, as is interpretation of dreams.
