ABSTRACT

According to group analytic theory, the group creates its own subjectivity which suggests the possibility of the formation of a group-self or a collective self. Any group or any organisation, a religious community, political party, sect, or social movement may try to use the elements of communitas in the service of social engineering. Ritual behaviour is a phylogenic invention to create social structure and culture. In the course of evolution a species started to use one of its functions in a new way—as a way of communication. The tradition of powerful ritual regression was later used and filled with new meaning. Totalitarian ideology is based on a wrong assumption that the transitory state of communitas can be maintained forever as a social system. The protest singers’ songs, together with samizdat, both “handmade art production”, represented a special cultural phenomenon that spread through Central Europe and played a decisive role later, in the final defeat of totalitarianism.
