ABSTRACT

The opposites of order versus chaos and creation versus destruction were central to Egyptian mythology, at the root of the gods' struggles, mankind's existence, and consciousness itself—civilisation is the temporary resolution of this conflict. The Chinese opposites of yin and yang symbolise interconnected forces that underpin the universe, the human body and mind. Far from being antagonistic opposites, they are an interconnected dynamic whole and form the ancient Chinese basis for understanding the world and human nature. The Chinese, Hindus, and Egyptians had a vision of the opposites that underlie mankind's struggle and posited them as universal principles—as this narrative does. Ra, the sun god of consciousness, rules the day but each night is devoured by the forces of darkness. Ra, the creator sun god on his night journey to do battle with the serpent of chaos, Apep.
