ABSTRACT

Pregnancy, from the survival perspective, is by far the most important physiological phenomenon. It is a phenomenon that ensures the continuance of human race. Society, collectively, is dependent upon, and invested in, the result of very personal journey, the human pregnancy. Health professionals are invested in safe delivery and healthy pregnancy outcome while ensuring the health of the mother in this process. Health professional, as members of human race, have their own assembly of biases and attitudes toward pregnancy. The pregnancy process as a whole, its effect on women and the women's behavior in response to it, is also influenced by the unique psychological makeup of each woman. In the Western world, pregnancy could be empowering in a different way. However, the paternalistic approach to pregnancy and pregnant women in Western cultures is mostly implied through the legal system and political maneuvers.
