ABSTRACT

Ralph Greenson was always interested in observations of clinical material that might add to people's psychoanalytic understanding. While dream elements symbolizing the male genital in the manifest content of dreams are extremely common, dreams in which the male genitals appear directly are by no means as frequent. They may occur in the same night or in the same period of time as do the more usual dreams that utilize symbols of the male genitals. The patient, a middle-aged man in the process of divorcing his wife, was having an affair with a woman his own age. While his sexual relationship with his wife was unsatisfactory, his sexual relationship with his mistress was extremely satisfying. He felt guilty about the relationship, however, and did not know whether a continuation of the affair would result in marriage.
