ABSTRACT

Relative maintenance of an ordinary capacity for human empathy and identification with ethical values may permit some terrorists to leave their system once its basic sadism, cruelty, irrationality and humanity become obvious to them. Fundamentally, the middle classes, sheltered by their wealth and fortune, have to retrieve their terrorist projections from the working classes. In Northern Ireland the mind of internal Loyalist or Republican and state security and political force exert enormous internal control of destructive impulses. Feeling safe and creating experiences of safety are crucial in reestablishing the normality of ordinary intimacy and human warmth in day-to-day relatedness in Northern Ireland. A central feature of the troubled mind of Northern Ireland is the intense polarization of good and bad into the two religious groups, which justifies a self-sufficient and non-dependent response between the two communities. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
