ABSTRACT

The unconscious establishes the identity between the part and the whole is simply confirmed by clinical evidence. In the light of the notion of infinite set it is possible to give an interpretation of this corollary of the principle of symmetry, which seems to offer wide perspectives. The distinction between conscious and unconscious does not coincide with the distinction between symmetrical and asymmetrical, as can be gathered especially from the discussions. Condensation, timelessness and exemption from mutual contradiction are also essential for the possibility of extensive and complex symbolic representations. The following consideration is probably not significant from the mathematical point of view, but has some value from the psychological point of view. The image may vary from one person to another: an avenue, a road, a series of larger and larger circles, the stars ever and ever more distant.
