ABSTRACT

Our entire lives are characterized by a longing to experience loving relationships. In order for human beings to thrive, we need close and intimate relationships, such as the one most of us experience in the first year of our lives. There is a critical mass of scientific evidence to the effect that there is a positive correlation between health and life expectancy and living in a committed relationship. The risk of developing psychological illnesses increases when couples lead an isolated life. The conditions involved can among others be frequent episodes of depression; anxiety; sleep disorder; symptoms of stress; suicidal thoughts; other psychological illnesses. The Imago approach is inspired by various psychological theories about how our personality develops in the relationships with our significant others who nurtured and cared for us during our childhood and youth. Imago Relationship Therapy is an approach to Relationship Therapy for couples developed during the 1980s in America by Harville Hendrix and Helen La Kelly Hunt.
