ABSTRACT

Women’s thinking corresponded more with the characteristics of the “Confused Eve,” as distinct from the previous era of the “Delinquent Eve”, when the most important unconscious factor was men’s envy of maternity and their defensive need to identify women with the demon itself. The change from one Eve to the other was the consequence not only of women’s constant struggle but also of the emergence of scientific reflection. The chapter shows that the law of retribution which rules the unconscious is present in the eternal and bloody struggle between Arabs and Jews, both circumcised. During lesser ritual, circumcised fathers sustain the circumcision of their male offspring, while the mother’s passive participation is part of the conspiracy. When the mother herself is suspected of treason, this might unconsciously induce a need to search for some other kind of belonging as a compensation, for an idealised or promised land, offering trust and hope.
