ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the three types of group, then mentions the relevant concepts, and applies them to the analysis of these three groups and thus arrives at a meaningful presentation of the essential features of the group-analytic group itself. The Functional Group: In ordinary life this is a working group, a group of workers with a definite object they wish to achieve, or a team. The Life Group (primary group, root group, miniature community). The simplest type of this group would be the family. However, the group as meant would comprise people in close relationship with each other beyond family ties, such as friends, teachers, workmates, etc., all of whom are vitally interdependent. The Group-Analytic Group (as a model of a psychotherapeutic group). This is a group of independent patients, ideally seven or eight, and a group analyst, who come together only for the purpose of treatment and are otherwise complete strangers.
