ABSTRACT

This chapter is a presentation of 'group psychotherapy' to a conference of leading European psycho-analysts soon after the end of the Second World War. The intimate revision of the personal development, Oedipus situation, pregenital sexuality, remain the domain of psycho-analysis. Group therapy, on the other hand, has a more immediate impact upon the solution of the patient's present, vital tasks. At the same time, the observation in a therapeutic group shows up very clearly in how far a patient's disturbance calls for approach on a more intimate, personal level, inside or outside the group, or should altogether be dealt with in extensive individual analysis. It has been shown that group analysis, like psycho-analysis, is: A special method of approach, A mode of therapy, An instrument of scientific investigation. It is the instrument of choice for the study of the dynamics of the group, a new science in which psychology and sociology meet.
