ABSTRACT

In 1993, Per Schultz Jorgensen and colleagues carried out a research study of at-risk children. The theoretical model stems from this study. The main emphasis in the study was on analysing causes and symptoms in connection with stressful childhood conditions. The studies carried out at Skodsborg indicate that disruptions in the relationship between a child and the child’s attachment figure(s) is a stress factor that leads to increased vulnerability and reduced resilience. An early stress factor, however, may also lead to improved resilience, which in turn improves the resources for dealing with subsequent stressors”. Institutionalised children often face a wide range of stressful situations, which may lead to increased vulnerability. At a residential institution, incorporating the theoretical model helps simplify many concerns and makes it easier to decide on concrete actions. The balance between stress and protection is a natural and integral part of everyday work at Skodsborg.
