ABSTRACT

The child had alternative attachment figures, which took some of the pressure off the attachment and the relationship between the parents and the child. As far as possible, the primary carers should be supported in engaging in attuned contact and in creating a developmentally supportive dialogue with the child. A carer and a child who are able to engage in synchronised behaviour will develop a shared dialogue. The strategies that children use to bring their parents out of a non-responsive state show the seriousness of the child’s reaction. The most efficient therapy for parents who are unhappy about their child’s maladaptive behaviour is to help them to work with their child in a sufficiently sensitive way. The condition for a successful therapeutic process is that the parents receive help to discover their own potential, to have faith in their parental behaviour, and to be curious about themselves and the child.
