ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the asymmetrical responsibility in relation to generating sustained change processes, as the therapist, just like the affectively attuned mother, initiates the self-regulating and identity-building process. It addresses that touch is an important theme in Theraplay, and at the conference this was the source of much debate. The caravan leader has to know the way and make sure that everyone arrives safely at the next oasis before nightfall. Right from the outset of a therapy session, the therapist has to take charge and act as the proverbial caravan leader. Jukka Makela wondered whether it is actually the child or the therapist who is carrying out the therapy when they have established a strong alliance. Haldor Ovreeide pointed to the important role of the co-operative process between the child and the parent or therapist; this is a crucial condition for the adult’s ability to follow and match the child’s responses.
