ABSTRACT

Every therapist, whether they realize it or not, brings their background and requirements with themselves into the consulting room, whether they are a patient or a psychotherapist or a psychoanalyst. Whatever behaviours they were required to have, or whatever roles they had to fulfil as they grew up from childhood to adulthood, has affected the way they treat those with whom they live or work, and what they feel about them. Many people would see this as their cultural and psychological background, which they take for granted, “Because it happens to everyone, does it not?”
