ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two general but fundamental themes relating to touch and psychoanalysis. The first section of this chapter explores why touch is prohibited in psychoanalysis and what this suggests about the hidden meanings given to touch. The second section asks: what is the nature of touch and what is its potential as a communicative sense? In addressing such basic issues as the meaning of touch, its nature and potential, this chapter raises fundamental and foundational concerns that have relevance for psychoanalysis and for the clinical situation as such.
