ABSTRACT

The therapeutic relational matrix is depicted a field of fields it is the tension held between the three dimensions of utility, transference, and I–thou dynamics. Mature intimate relationships exist in a fourth dimension which is created by the dialectic and playful tension between these three fields, a matrix which includes both mutual and unilateral aspects, symmetrical and asymmetrical, utilitarian and humanistic, transferential and transcending transference. Many distinctions between different therapeutic approaches might be understood through this relational matrix model. On a very basic level, the utility relationship is the motivation for seeking therapy and all other relational dimensions are somewhat accountable for the relationship. In many relationships, the functional aspect is reciprocal. Friendships require a degree of mutuality: both parties get something from the relationship. The disentanglement of transferential dynamics thus became a joint voyage of seeking clarity in the faith of the possibility of, and for the purpose of real connection.
