ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about training counsellors to work in primary care, and explains ideas about what is required and how such requirements might be delivered. It details three different course designs, namely a 1995 curriculum, the recommendations of the Counselling and Psychotherapy Forum for Primary Care, and the option of supervised practice associated with monitoring. The chapter provides a low-key alternative for initially qualified counsellors that emphasises robust arrangements for continuous professional development through peer and supervisory review and a portfolio. Personal and professional development, progress in ethical thinking and self-awareness gained through personal development groups or therapy is essential in initial training courses. If group work to address issues of anxiety, stress management, bereavement, or relationship difficulties, or health education and life change issues, was to be offered, courses were encouraged to include training for it during their course.
