ABSTRACT

This chapter provides illustrative clinical material to describe transsexualism condition. It describes the process of massification as a defence against the aggregation phenomenon based on annihilation anxieties derived from body dysfunctions, such as self harm, and eating disorders, which most patients presented. The chapter explains the author’s own dream and her co-therapists dream of the conundrum. It illustrates how affected clinicians are in their countertransferential processes. Mothers seem to perceive the male child’s gender separateness as a threat to their own personal integrity. To offer gender dysphoric patients a forum and a space to discuss freely their own feelings about their dilemmas regarding mind–body splits without being, or without experiencing being, pushed into either male or female “solutions”. Initially, the therapists’ countertransference replicated the patients’ intense fears of being misunderstood, judged, and persecuted in an intensive concrete way by feeling useless, powerless, and, at times, sharing a degree of confusion about their own roles.
