ABSTRACT
The body of antiquity is not only less discordant, but closer to some version of what we would previously refer to as a more consistent and “natural” state. This is certainly part of the argument that Foucault makes—the ancients were much more natural in their approach to their bodies and sexuality. To take a political issue important to Foucault, homosexuality was a more natural or accepted practice in the ancient world. The notion of the Imaginary is the very basis for the definition of politics as described by Carl Schmitt in The Concept of the Political. For the conservative Nazi jurist Schmitt, harmony and positive relations in the political realm are not a past fantasy, but a fantasy of the future political realm held by socialists and communists and other utopians who deny the conflict and potential for violence that are fundamental to human existence.
