ABSTRACT

Exam stress, bullying, and abuse it is not unusual to read newspaper reports of adolescents whose experiences have driven them to suicide. While the "successful" cases may hit the headlines, less often reported are those young people whose attempts to overdose, cut their wrists, hang themselves, or end their lives in other ways have "failed". That said, the findings highlight considerations for the assessment of suicide potential and provide a context for the specific predictive factors in this age group. The professional demonstrates a commitment to understanding the extent and intensity of an adolescent's pain by creating the time and emotional space to explore it fully. Communication with members of the supportive/professional network this network can include parents, foster carers, teachers, the GP, members of secondary mental health services, inpatient services, and/or the local emergency service.
