ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the closer look at some of the circumstances that determine whether a person develops this type of addiction. The perfectionism shows itself through the individual wanting to perform tasks to perfection. The characteristics described above are seen in most workaholics and therefore form the basis of the explanation of this type of addiction. In some cases, a combination of these characteristics will occur. Earlier on, experts equated work addiction with the so-called Type A personality, because they thought that these two phenomena were identical. The positive thing, though, is that Type A individuals can actually learn to behave differently. If they are motivated, they can become less stressed and more relaxed through exercise. “The environment” is the broad term we use for our surroundings. When speaking of a person’s environment, it may be both the near surroundings, such as the family, or the overall environment, such as society.
