ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the difficulties and costs that are the result of, or are related to, an addiction to work. In addition to the problems mentioned earlier of drifting into a world of work, there are other consequences of occupying oneself solely with one’s job. The number of people who, for a period, are unable to work because of stress is increasing. There are also indications that many more people suffer from stress than is indicated in some statistics. The conditions that stress us are called stressors, and they can come in many different shapes. Stressors are divided into three groups: life events, physical stressors, and psychological stressors. Psychological stressors are problems and conflicts either at home or at the workplace. They can be disagreements and arguments with the partner or other family members, financial difficulties, illness, problems relating to a change of home, or a career change.
