ABSTRACT

In 1965 the author joined Esso Petroleum UK as "social sciences adviser". For five years, from 1965 to 1970, She was in a role in Esso called "social sciences adviser". The Secretary of the Heyworth Committee, Albert Cherns, started a unit in Loughborough University concerned with the utilization of social science research, and it was at about the same time that Esso decided to launch an experiment in making use of the social sciences inside a company. Esso had distribution plants around the country, where fuel oil was stored in large tanks and from which it was taken to customers. The Purfleet terminal was located on the Thames estuary and received product by ship from the refineries. The headquarters of Esso Europe were in London, and there appeared on the scene an ER manager for Europe. Esso was about to have a new chairman, who spent the three months between being appointed and taking up his post in Esso Europe.
