ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the author's way of developing a coaching relationship, viewing it through different lenses. The lens of experience is used to explore how coaching relationships unfold to offer insight into the client's situation. The theoretical lenses of systemic, psychoanalytic, and attachment theories are used to examine the dynamics at work during this development. The life cycle of coaching relationship is offered as a framework to demonstrate how the relationship can release leadership potential and resources. The coaching relationship is a journey of discovery, where unexpected thoughts or connections are always waiting in the wings. Working towards termination of the coaching relationship also links to issues that clients will have to negotiate in their organizations. Evaluating coaching takes the form of reviewing what has been achieved against the agreed aims and objectives. This process is worked on at review points throughout the coaching relationship and new objectives are set as the clients' capacity to think deeper and wider grows.
