ABSTRACT

Western psychology has been concerned about describing and analysing neurotic behaviour, and about developing therapeutic methods to help free people from conditioning. Western therapists know much less about how people can heal their neuroses from within. The most effective healing occurs when the therapist weakens her/his own resistance to get in “touch” with the client’s fears and anxieties, thus to share the client’s world. More than in any other area, the parent’s fears, anxieties, and problems may often mirror unresolved issues in the therapist’s or health professional’s own life, related to birth and early experiences. When the therapist trusts her/himself more than theory, this provides a model for how a client can begin to trust and connect with his or her own feelings and personal resources. A baby needs her parents to be fully present for her healthy development, as by being present they can meet the baby’s actual needs.
