ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests how writers’ knowledge of personality types can bring a little reason and order to this process. It discusses four types of audiences: Sensing Thinking type (ST), Sensing Feeling type (SF), Intuitive Thinking (NT), and Intuitive Feeling (NF). Extraverted Feeling types, who are naturally more casual and conversational, generally write in a more informal style. ST types prefer writing that is factual, objective, clear, realistic, unambiguous, logical, and to the point. They want to know exactly what the problem is and how it can be fixed. SFs, while as appreciative of specifics, details, and clarity as STs, are more interested in writing that is about and addressed to specific people. NTs prefer writing that goes beyond the mere facts of the situation. They also want a theoretical explanation. NFs prefer writing that builds a communication bridge between and among human beings.
