ABSTRACT

Babies register separations, even if the separations are very short. Babies prefer that what they read in their parents' eyes is enjoyment. Attachment is the deep emotional bond formed between babies and the adults who look after them. The attachment status of a baby is usually linked with their parent's own attachment status. Co-sleeping with parents, which is statistically the norm around the world, can, in the early weeks, provide a sense of security for the baby, who usually then settles into routines more quickly. Weaning from breast or bottle is a very important separation from the mother. The transitional object helps a space between mother and baby to open up——a transitional space, a potential space, on the baby's journey to a new way-of-being—and shows the baby's creative capacity to transform an object into a companion. Some babies gain a lot of stimulation and pleasure from being in a creche.
