ABSTRACT

Research in neuroscience has greatly contributed to our understanding of the mind and brain. The full story of how the mind neurologically functions and produces consciousness will likely not be understood for another fifty to 200 years. The biopsychosocial model used in modern day psychiatry proposes that psychological functioning is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. An important point to remember when considering these different levels is that not every problem can be reduced to each level of abstraction, and each level of abstraction cannot necessarily be reduced to a lower level. It is nonetheless an important field that has made significant contributions to understanding of human functioning. One of the most interesting advances in neuroscience has been the discovery of the default network, which is the network of brain structures associated with free thinking and internally focused cognitive processes.
