ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the amplification method is applied to these symbols and common themes. The interpretation begins with the amplification of the Virgin Mary, carried out in two sections. This first section analyses the virgin aspect of the Virgin Mary, while the second concentrates on the mother aspect. Similar to the ancient virgin goddesses of antiquity, revealing associations with the virgin archetype, the Virgin is free and uncontrolled, and “belonging-to-no-man” similar to the ancient virgin goddesses of antiquity. In the second part of the amplification of the Virgin Mary, the mother aspect of the image is interpreted, and as the Great Mother, she is the goddess of time and faith, and similar to the Great Spinstress, she spins the thread of fate. The amplification method also examined aspects of the historical Mary and the cult surrounding her in order to gain a broader understanding of her impact in both the Western and Eastern worlds. The process of interpretation through amplification continued with a focus on other main common themes identified in Chapter 4, such as the dove, olive branch, and Christ Child.
