ABSTRACT

The field of higher education in the US is highly esteemed worldwide for its academic rigor and research excellence. But many scholars, as well as practitioners, have been projecting that its traditional large university model is about to fade away. While the field indeed is being transformed in many ways, such dire predictions do not seem to be materializing at least in the near future. So where is the gap? In this chapter, I explore this gap by first summarizing some of the prevailing perspectives and their related debates, and then identifying what we could be missing. Focusing on the undergraduate education as its largest component, I shift the conventional focus from the cost of higher education to its content and introduce the emerging picture that the new perspective offers.
