ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the personal psychological issues that seem to restrict the potential of systems thinking as a skill and capacity much needed to be developed and adopted in the world of hyperturbulence. The key lies in perhaps the most fundamental notion of systems thinking, the interrelationship between structure and process. On the vertical rock axis is placed systems as ‘out there’. These are the various disciplines of systems science that take the observer for granted. They tend towards ‘systems are real’. On the horizontal whirlpool axis is placed thinking as ‘in here’. The resolution zone, second-order systems thinking and beyond, is an indication that there is a third space possible that not only integrates the two apparently incompatible positions but also points towards a new emergent discipline. Systems thinking has come a long way. However, of the two components, the systems component part has developed way ahead of the thinking component.
