ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with syncretistic tendencies arising out of the Zionist prophet's and the Zionist Church's interpretation of the Christian message in terms of the Zulu religious heritage. It argues that independent Churches of Zionist type. Where and when these syncretistic Zionist practices and ideas exercise an influence upon Churches of Ethiopian type, this is as far as possible pointed out in the text. The basic pattern from which Zulu Zionism is copied is that of diviner and witch-finder activities rather than that of the historic Christian Church. The fundamental concept in Zionist ideology is uMoya, the Spirit, by them understood to be the Holy Spirit of whom the Book has spoken. The outpouring of uMoya which results in tongues did not start among the Zulus when, in 1908, certain American missionaries were "the first to carry the glorious gospel of the Holy Spirit" to South Africa.
