ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines Anupgiri's diplomacy, leading to Mahadji Sindhia's supremacy at Delhi. The irresistible Mughalia leader, thereupon, broke into rebellion; leagued with the Jaipur and Macheri Rajas, he ranged in the region round Agra. Shafi met this challenge to his authority by making accommodation with his erstwhile opponents, Afrasiyab and Anupgiri. As early as November 1783, Anupgiri had perceived the coming change in the direction of the court-policy from Brownes removal to Delhi and Afrasiyab's visits to his camp at Mathura en route to the capital. The Gosain seemed to be outmatched in diplomacy and Sindhia's cause to suffer a set-back, but Hamadani now launched upon vigorous hostilities. The Gosain then made proposal for an accommodation of the matters at issue by a friendly interview. Mahadji rejected it as well, where-upon Anupgiri felt so hurt that he declared his intention of renouncing the world and taking to a life of mendicancy.
