ABSTRACT

Many bands of Naga Sannyasis and their mahants did important military service to the Rajas of Rajputana, Gujrat and other States, and they were rewarded with grants of land and yearly money allowance, as the records of these States prove. Many other orders of Hindu religious warriors took part in these wars of Rajputana and Malwa along with the Dasnamis. Maharajah Abhay Singh died in 1749 and his young and reckless son Ram Singh succeeded him. But next year the new Maharajah of Jodhpur was deposed by the nobles whom he had insulted and the throne was taken by Bakht Singh the younger brother of Abhay. In the wars of this State with its neighbour Bikaner, in the early nineteenth century, a Gosain force under Mahant Bhairo Puri and Mahant Sawant Puri defeated the Bikaner attack on Kot Vikrampur, at the cost of losing their two brave leaders and fifteen common soldier.
