ABSTRACT

The Island contains the Provincial Government Offices the Mombasa District Administrative Headquarters, the port of the Old Town, and Kilindini Harbour, which is the largest in East Africa. The family and kinship obligations of the tribal community in the rural area are directly reflected in the pattern of expenditure in the urban area. These obligations are directly enforced through regular visits of relatives who come specifically to dunthe urban African for cash contributions to the whole range of his ritual, ceremonial, and kinship obligations as well as the modern demands of taxes, education, and clothing. It is the first time in the history of East Africa that educated Africans, at least educated to the point where they can read and write in English and Swahili, are unable to secure employment in 'white-collar' jobs.
