ABSTRACT

A common approach to the classification of slow learners operated on a bipolar basis. The classification results in three main types of pupils' needs which require, respectively, adaptive-developmental curriculum; corrective or compensatory curriculum; and remedial curriculum. The remedial curriculum described here is intended to meet pupil needs which were not widely recognized in the project schools. In all the schools there is need for more careful consideration of the different curricular needs in the population of slow learners and for a new approach to the classification of needs in a way which will assist thinking about curricular provision. A small minority of slow learners may require modifications of curricula, teaching and support which can be provided only in a special school. It is important that teachers of slow learners should understand clearly the nature of a curriculum which combines wide community involvement with an emphasis on the objectives to be pursued in the education of slow learners.
