ABSTRACT

The Warnock Report has been influential in its emphasis on the importance of involving parents in all aspects of the arrangements for the education of children with special needs. The parents of children with special needs have knowledge of them gained by living with them from birth, which is denied to the teacher. The Warnock report commends the idea of home/school notebooks in which parents and teachers record progress at home and at school and suggests that cooperation among parents of children with special needs may be valuable. The school serves the local community by teaching its children. The local community can also serve the school in many ways. The local community also contains many people who are experts in their field who can often be persuaded to contribute to children's education, sometimes by talking about their work and sometimes by working with pupils.
