ABSTRACT

Pupils with special needs are present in every school and all teachers have the problem of finding ways of giving them access to the curriculum. A special needs teacher may work in the classroom with a subject teacher, helping all the pupils who need additional assistance. Team or cooperative teaching is a situation in which a group of pupils works with two or more teachers, sometimes sharing whole group presentations and sometimes working in groups or individually. Mixed ability teaching has the advantage that more able pupils can set a pace and an example for the rest, who start with the advantage of not being labelled as less able than others. Many secondary schools have some form of setting and this offers some opportunity to make provision for pupils of different abilities according to need in different subjects. Setting also offers opportunities to exceptionally able pupils to work in a group with intellectual peers.
