ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author looks at the role of the professional counsellor in helping the adult client group to come to terms with visual impairment and the problems that they are likely to face in further education. Whilst the author progress considerations of her work with adults who happen to have a visual impairment, she wants to clarify a point which is central to the way, she approaches her work with individuals. For the clients with whom the author works, their age and their visual impairment are only parts of who they are, parts which may have an effect on their self-image, but which are, nevertheless, only parts of their whole being. The source may be linked to the visual impairment or the freckles, or it may not, and it is important that the author do not bring her assumptions about what having a visual impairment or freckles may mean to her relationship with this person.
