ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three specific social issues regarding disabled students from the many social issues concerning education on the one hand and disability on the other. The social issues are: whether or not disabled students should use the technology; how the technology helps or hinders integration, and the issue of access for disabled students to benefits brought by the technology to able-bodied students. The chapter discusses whether disabled students should use the new technology. Disabled students, except perhaps the very young, must often be involved in decisions about provision, use, modification and replacement of the technology. Integration and mainstreaming require some accommodation in ordinary schools to the needs of disabled students, whether they are physically-disabled or have sensory disabilities. While overcoming their disabilities by using information technology, disabled people also want to use the same computer programs as anyone else, to learn how to accomplish the same tasks.
