ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three more detailed case studies such as Lusaka, Patrice and Limela. The cases of Lusaka, Patrice, and Limela may be seen as examples of three broad categories of men in Avenue 21. Lusaka is an example of the well-established residents who had been largely or wholly brought up in Stanleyville and whose social connexions were almost entirely centred in the town. Patrice represents the category of immigrants who had recently left their tribal areas, and who had only arrived in town during the period of the study or in the few years immediately preceding it. Limela's social position in the neighbourhood was in turn markedly different from that of either Lusaka or Patrice. He had no appreciable network of kinsmen and fellow-tribesmen like Patrice; nor did he have a 'home neighbourhood' or a set of integrated networks comparable to Lusaka's.
