ABSTRACT

H. Maturana's theories of cognition (ToC) imply certainly an antirealist ontological position. This chapter addresses Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) limitations and proposes a theoretical framework informed by ToC concepts/ideas, by exploring how key concepts from Maturana's ToA and BoC taht is Structured-Determined Systems and Organizational Closure might help to expand and complement Checkland's SSM process. Amongst the systemic methodologies available to systems practitioners, SSM is one of the most used problem structuring methods. The work of Maturana and Varelaon on the nature of living, the biological nature of cognition and knowledge have been having a far-reaching influence on the systems and various others fields. While the Checkland approach lies certainly in the interpretivist camp, the philosophical implications of Maturana's work are more difficult to frame. The chapter shoes that J. Brocklesby to explore further SSM theoretical underpinnings and Maturana's ideas. The SSM general mode starts when a problem situation is perceived and somehow structured.
